MY TOP COLD & FLU TIPS

There are new cycles of flu viruses every 6-8 weeks and it's possible to catch the flu at any time of the year. However, as winter approaches and the temperature cools, we increasingly tend to confine ourselves indoors, often in poorly ventilated spaces, where people are more likely to be in contact with one another's germs! Combine this tendency with lower consumption of fruit as they dwindle out of season, and losing our ability to produce Vitamin D from the sun, and you've guessed it: the cold and flu are out to get us!  Contrary to popular belief, coming into contact with a variety of germs is actually a very good thing as it helps build a strong immune system! Even the occasional cold & flu is necessary to rid the body of harmful pathogens and is a good sign that the immune system is responsive to invaders! That said, it's always good to be prepared with some natural solutions should you fall sick in order to avoid pharmaceutical options, which should only be considered as a last resort.

THE FLU SHOT: FACTS

Getting the flu shot is far from adequate to prevent illness during the winter months! Whether you plan on getting vaccinated or not, you should consider the following:

  1. The flu shot is not designed to prevent the flu. It's simply a pharmaceutical based option designed to help reduce the severity of symptoms should you get the flu.

  2. The flu shot only encourages immunity against 3-4 out of many hundreds of flu viruses.

  3. The flu shot does not offer any protection whatsoever against other common pathogens during flu season such as bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

  4. The flu shot is not a replacement for other forms of prevention, including: nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, hand washing, etc. Getting the flu shot to replace other forms of prevention actually makes people much more prone to infection by neglecting important preventative measures to keep their immune systems strong and healthy.

  5. The flu shot does not offer any long term benefit and, for the reasons listed above, is one of the least effective preventative measures you can take to prevent illness during the winter months.

COLD & FLU HOME REMEDIES

The following remedies are powerful options to maintain a robust immune system throughout the winter months. Although you should try to include these in your diet all winter long, it's even more critical to be diligent at the first signs of infection!

  • Homemade soups, chicken and beef bone broths, and vegetable broths: These options contain critical nutrients to boost immunity and kill pathogens!

  • Fresh Garlic (Also available in supplement form): Potent antimicrobial that can kill many types of pathogens, including viruses, on contact!

  • Freshly pressed celery juice (2 cups on an empty stomach in the morning): Replenishes electrolytes, super hydrating, potent antimicrobial to kill many types of pathogens on contact, reduces inflammation, thins/clears mucous to ease congestion, and detoxifies the body!

  • Freshly pressed cucumber juice(2 cups on an empty stomach in the evening): Super hydrating, fever suppressant, anti-inflammatory, thins/clears mucous to ease congestion, and kills many types of pathogens!

  • Natural electrolyte drink (Purified water, with freshly squeezed lemon or lime and raw honey), Coconut water is also a great natural electrolyte drink - Drink large quantities throughout the day: Replenishes electrolytes, super hydrating, provides critical fuel to the body, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and contain potent antimicrobial properties.

  • Herbal teas (Thyme, Ginger, Holy Basil, Echinacea, Rose Hips, Peppermint, Nettle, Elderberry and Hibiscus are great options): Contain potent antimicrobial properties, anti-inflammatory, thins/clears mucous to ease congestion, and detoxifying.

  • Significantly increase your fruit intake - Smoothies can be particularly soothing when you are ill. Fresh or frozen fruits are equally good options: Super hydrating, replenishes electrolytes, provides critical fuel to the body, boosts the immune system, detoxifies the body, and contain potent antimicrobial properties to kill off pathogens!

FOODS TO ELIMINATE AT THE ONSET OF INFECTION

  • dairy

  • wheat/gluten

  • refined/processed/artificial sugar

  • eggs

  • corn

  • vegetable/canola oil

  • processed meats (cold cuts)

  • pork

N.B.These foods are known to “feed” pathogens of all types (viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic) and accelerate their growth significantly, which can worsen symptoms and prolong the duration of infection. Also, many of these foods  interfere with common pharmaceutical drugs (including antibiotics) and can even make natural supplements less effective. By eliminating these problem foods at the first sign of infection, you can slow down its progression significantly!

TALK TO YOUR PHYSICIAN USING THESE "MAGIC" WORDS

If you or a loved one come down with a cold or flu and you're concerned about the severity of your symptoms, you should always consult with a Medical Physician. However, research has shown that medical doctors are often quick to prescribe medication to patients even when it's not justified. In fact, overprescribing drugs is one of the most concerning problems with conventional medicine and has led to untold damage to peoples lives from the side effects of these unnecessary prescriptions, including: addiction/dependency, severe allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance, and more!

What's even more shocking is that medical doctors often justify overprescribing unnecessarily because they "didn't want to leave the patient empty handed," or "the patient requested it."  Given the dangers associated with prescription drugs, we should definitely take measures to ensure we only use prescription drugs as a last resort. On that note, please remember that the cold & flu are caused by viruses, so should never be treated with antibiotics (which are designed to kill bacteria).

That said, making the following magical statement to the doctor could spare you and/or your loved ones from the untold harms of unnecessary prescriptions: "I would rather not take any prescription medications unless you deem it to be necessary."  This simple sentence will ensure the physician knows that you are seeking sound medical advice and are not interested in taking drastic measures (such as taking antibiotics) if they are not truly needed.

Remember, having a good relationship with your Medical Physician and clearly expressing your concerns is essential to receiving quality care. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself by asking questions and to speak up if you are concerned about your doctors recommendations.
